After more than a week away, the time had come.
Manor Park awaited.
The grass? Still green. The air? Still rich with the scent of untold stories. The pigeons? Still disrespectfully occupying MY territory.
I stepped onto the field like a pug returning from exile, ready to reclaim what was mine—my trails, my throne, my rightful spot in the middle of the path where humans must walk around me.
And what a return it was.
First—a new friend.
A fellow four-legged companion who respected my presence, sniffed me with appropriate admiration, and left me feeling satisfied that I was still a respected figure in the dog community.
Then—a slight misunderstanding.
A young hooman. Loud. Unpredictable. Too close. I won’t lie—I was unsettled. He expected engagement; I expected distance.
And before I could make my strategic exit, he was upset. Was it my fault? Absolutely not. Was I the one truly scared in this situation? A hundred percent.
But I shook it off, because the final moment of my patrol was near.An elderly dog. A kind hooman. A treat, placed gently upon the ground—an offering. I approached. Slowly. Confidently.
Was this meant for me? Surely, yes. But before I could claim my rightful snack, fate intervened. A moment of hesitation. A pause too long. The treat was removed. My chance was gone.
And yet—I do not dwell on loss. For today, I returned. Today, I reclaimed Manor Park. And tomorrow? I shall return again.
Perhaps next time, with fewer misunderstandings and more guaranteed snacks.
Because one thing is certain—Phil’s patrol will never be forgotten.
